There wasn’t a reason why, but more of a need. The urge inside Sully pushed him to search, to find a way out.

Andy had locked the door well, and despite every attempt at the knob, it wouldn’t budge. Every call to his mother returned unanswered. Scratches streaked the wood, and as tasty as it was, he didn’t like that his fingers were bleeding.

He explored the rest of the basement. Searched with an eye out for anything that could help him escape.

There were no windows. The area was never meant to be anything more than a crawlspace with a taller ceiling. The foundation met the earth, wood on dirt and stone, and as Sully circled the room, he was left with the answer. He would have to dig if he wanted out.

He went back to the pile. He’d eaten an arm down to the bone and now sank his teeth into a leg. He felt the flesh in his mouth, the brush of the skin against his cheek as he bit. The sensation of broken flesh pressing against him. The taste of fresh meat, but even more, the taste of it aging—it was like a piece of fruit ripening before his eyes.

He chomped, and the bone against his teeth sent chills through his being. He’d need to take some of this with him. He examined what was left in the pile, and something told him to save the torso. It would age the best. As time and ripeness found it, he would enjoy it immensely. He also had another arm and half a leg. He wasn’t sure where the other half went. And the head was gone.

He remembered dinner. The ax. The split head and the lovely brain inside it. A flash came to him, an eyeball in his hand, then his mouth. The warm juice, the salty, delicious goo. The soft, tender tissue. And a sense that his mother was watching, smiling with no eyes of her own. Where had they gone? But that thought quickly faded as the need was thrust upon him for another bite. It was hard to believe that happened only yesterday; it felt like the basement had been his home forever.
